CBS uses Massachusetts slaying to warn about violence when young people break up

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The CBS magazine “48 Hours” is using the story of a Massachusetts teenager whose ex-boyfriend was convicted of killing her to draw attention to the issue of violence that takes place after young people end romantic relationships.

The show airs Saturday at 10 p.m. ET. Susan Zirinsky, senior executive producer, said Wednesday she felt the 2011 murder of Lauren Dunne Astley of Wayland, Mass., by Nathaniel Fujita could have value beyond the typical crime story. CBS tells viewers about signs in a relationship that could point to future trouble.

One tip CBS offers, about not visiting an ex alone after a breakup, sadly could have helped Astley. She was found strangled in the summer after high school graduation. Fujita is serving a sentence of life without parole.
