LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A Los Angeles jury has convicted a doctor of killing three patients who overdosed on painkillers she prescribed.
Dr. Hsiu-Ying “Lisa” Tseng was convicted on Friday of second-degree murder.
The rare prosecution of a doctor on murder charges came after a dozen of Tseng’s patients died during an epidemic of prescription drug abuse.
She was only charged with three killings because other factors were involved in some of those deaths, such as drugs prescribed by other doctors and a possible suicide.
Tseng’s lawyer claimed the doctor had been naive to prescribe so many medications and didn’t think her patients would abuse the drugs.
Prosecutors say she prescribed crazy amounts of medication to people who didn’t need it and ignored signs they were dying from overdoses.
