VERNON – A community celebration takes place today to honour local Olympians Kevin Hill and Justin Dorey.
Hill’s family, along with Vernon Mayor Rob Sawatzky and several local businesses, invite the public to join them in welcoming home the athletes from 3-6 p.m. today at Kal Tire Place. Hill, who placed eighth in snowboard cross, will be attending the event while Dorey, who finished 12th in half-pipe, is unable to be there.
“We share the pride the community feels for the standards of Olympic sports excellence that Kevin and Justin have achieved,” Sawatzky said. “We are proud to help the community in honoring them for their dedication and for the joy their endeavors have given us.”
While many Vernonites gathered to watch the competitions as they were occurring, Hill’s sister Shanda said it was important for Kevin to be able to personally thank the community for its support.
“Kevin is a true ambassador for Vernon,” Shanda said. “He has travelled all over the world and yet he is passionately in love with Vernon and the Okanagan, and all who know him will attest to that.”
Other event sponsors include Real Canadian Superstore, Tim Horton’s, Save-On Foods, Rancho Vignola and Sure Copy. Anyone wishing to meet and congratulate Kevin, his family, and the family of Justin Dorey are welcome to attend.
