Wildfire near Juniper Beach contained

KAMLOOPS – What began as an abandoned campfire not properly extinguished grew to a 10.6 ha fire this week, according to officials.

It's believed a fire in a hay field at Juniper Beach west of Kamloops and near Wallachin started Sunday, June 8, though B.C. Wildfire crews were only called in on Monday.

“The smoke was highly visible from the TransCanada Highway,” Fire Information Officer Kelsey Winter says. “We’d like to remind people to report any smoke or flame they see.”

Five firefighters were on scene yesterday and this morning to contain the fire and investigators are out there today to confirm whether it was an abandoned campfire that started the fire.

Winter says smoke will likely still be visible from the highway today though the forecasted showers for this afternoon should help knock it down.

No structures were threatened by the fire and no one was injured.
