Mystery history film appears to show Penticton Airport in 1958

Reel Life / Canada MotorSport hopes viewers of their latest mystery reel, episode 559, can help them identify the circumstances of this 1958 short film, that seems to depict the arrival of a hockey team with ties to Penticton.

This 1958 film clip is believed to be based in the Okanagan but details are hard to come by. There’s a large crowd, a nighttime flight arrival, fur hats, snow, a Vees photo and connections to TWA, an international airline in the day.

What exactly is going on? There are some closeups of people's faces that may be recognizable to some viewers.

The film is slightly less than four minutes and depicts the arrival of a group of passengers milling around a DC-3 aircraft in the evening hours.

Snow is on the ground, and it appears a large crowd has gathered to meet the passengers.

There’s also a presentation of some sort involving a 1955 Penticton Vees hockey team photo.

One observant viewer was able to connect the DC-3 passenger plane in the video to today’s Whitehorse Airport through its registration number, CF-CPY.

Interestingly, the very same plane now sits on a pedestal in front of the airport where it is known as the “world’s largest weather vane."
