VANCOUVER — Police in Vancouver have issued a warning to electric scooter riders after the death of a woman who was involved in a crash earlier this month.
Vancouver police say in a statement that the crash happened on July 3 near Venables Street and Commercial Drive, when the woman riding the e-scooter collided with the side of a vehicle.
The woman was not wearing a helmet and struck her head on the ground, and police say she died in hospital on Saturday despite initially being conscious after the crash.
There has been a rash of e-scooter and e-dirt bike crashes and case of illegal operations in Metro Vancouver and across British Columbia in recent months, some resulting in serious injuries.
Vancouver police say a rider was injured Sunday in the Coal Harbour neighbourhood after being struck from behind by another scooter, resulting in a head injury and a broken collarbone.
Police say the woman in the second crash wasn’t wearing a helmet.
“In both incidents, a helmet may not have prevented the collisions, but it could have significantly reduced the severity of the injuries,” says Vancouver Police Sgt. Adam Donaldson in a statement.
“Please make sure to wear a properly fitted helmet and ensure it is secured appropriately.”
A certified helmet is required by law for those who operate e-scooters in B.C.
