Get out the sunscreen and grab a bottle of water it’s going to get hot this week in the Southern Interior.
Environment Canada has issued a yellow heat warning since temperatures are expected to hit the mid-30s during the day and stay in the high teens overnight in the Okanagan Valley, Shuswap and South Thompson.
People have been advised to watch for signs of heat illness and check on vulnerable people in their lives.
“Heat affects everyone, but the risks are greater for seniors, people who live alone, people with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or respiratory disease, people with mental illness such as schizophrenia, depression, or anxiety, people with substance use disorders, people with limited mobility,” Environment Canada wrote in its warning.
Temperatures are expected to moderate by Saturday, July 18 and there’s a chance of thunderstorms for the rest of the week in the Okanagan.
Next week, daily high temperatures are projected to climb back up to around 35 C in Kamloops and the Okanagan.
“Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. Never leave susceptible people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle,” Environment Canada wrote.
