Wilyer Abreu hits 2 HRs as Red Sox beat Rays for 12th straight win

BOSTON (AP) — Wilyer Abreu hit two home runs – the second a go-ahead, two-run shot in the seventh inning that gave him four homers in two games — and the Boston Red Sox rallied for a 7-6 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday to extend their winning streak to 12 games.

Abreu also hit two in the nightcap of a doubleheader sweep Friday.

Victor Mesa Jr. had a go-ahead, two-run homer and Jonny DeLuca added a solo shot for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Abreu’s shot off Garrett Cleavinger (2-3) capped a four-run inning that wiped out a 6-3 deficit. Ceddanne Rafaela had an RBI double and Masataka Yoshida had a run-scoring ground out in the inning.

Ryan Watson (1-0) pitched two innings for his first major league victory and Aroldis Chapman got the final three outs for his 21st save.

Trailing 3-2 in the fourth, the Rays jumped ahead with three runs. Mesa Jr. hit his homer into Tampa Bay’s bullpen and Yandy Díaz added an RBI single.

DeLuca’s homer over the Green Monster made it 6-3 in the seventh.

Making his second start after missing last season recovering from Tommy John surgery, Boston’s Patrick Sandoval gave up five runs in five innings.

PIRATES 7, GUARDIANS 1, 1ST GAME

GUARDIANS 5, PIRATES 3, 2ND GAME

CLEVELAND (AP) — Rookie All-Star Travis Bazzana hit a two-run homer to center field in the ninth inning for his first career walk-off hit and Cleveland rallied for a victory over Pittsburgh to split in a doubleheader.

The Pirates won the first game 7-1.

Patrick Bailey led off the ninth with a single to right, Steven Kwan followed with a double down the left-field line. Bailey tried to score from first but was tagged out at home by Pittsburgh catcher Rafael Flores Jr. after the relay throw by third baseman Nick Gonzales.

Bazzana — the top overall pick in the 2024 amateur draft — then connected on a 1-0 changeup by Dennis Santana (2-5) and drove it 414 feet for his eighth homer of the season and give Cleveland its fourth walk-off win of the season.

Cade Smith (3-1), the Guardians’ seventh pitcher of the night, got the win after retiring the Pirates in order in the ninth. Kwan had three hits.

CUBS 6, TWINS 2

CHICAGO (AP) — Nico Hoerner had four hits to tie a career high, Matthew Boyd gave up three hits and one run in six sharp innings to win his fourth straight start, and Chicago beat Minnesota.

Michael Busch homered, and Miguel Amaya and Pedro Ramirez had two RBIs each to help Chicago win for the third time in four games. Hoerner had an RBI and scored a run.

Kody Clemens hit a pair of solo homers for the Twins, whose three-game winning streak came to an end.

Boyd (6-1) struck out four and walked one in his fifth outing since returning from knee surgery.

Jacob Webb allowed three hits to start the ninth, but the Cubs got a quirky double play after Brooks Lee’s liner to the gap glanced off Pete Crow-Armstrong’s glove for a single. Relay throws cut down Josh Bell between third and home, and caught Lee off first. Webb fanned Clemens for the final out.

Busch’s first-inning solo shot put Chicago ahead 1-0. The ball was recovered in the right-field bleachers by Anthony Rizzo, who took part in a pregame ceremony to commemorate the Cubs 2016 World Series championship.

Twins starter Taj Bradley (9-4) allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings, striking out six and walking three. The right-hander had given up just eight runs over his previous five starts.

ROCKIES 10, REDS 3

DENVER (AP) — TJ Rumfield had a two-run homer during a four-hit game and Tomoyuki Sugano threw efficiently into the seventh in his return from the injured list as Colorado beat Cincinnati.

Sugano (9-4) didn’t appear bothered by back issues that landed him on the 15-day IL earlier this month. He went 6 1/3 innings and struck out three while walking none. Two of the three runs the right-hander allowed came off solo homers from Reds catcher Jose Trevino.

The 36-year-old Sugano improved to 4-0 over his four starts against NL Central teams this season, including 2-0 versus the Reds. He couldn’t solve Trevino, who had his third career multihomer game.

Sugano was staked to a seven-run lead after three innings. It was part of a big day at the plate for the Rockies, who had four players with at least two hits. The four-hit game was a career-best for Rumfield. He also had a pair of RBI singles to go with his 456-foot homer to right-center for four RBIs

At 40-60, the Rockies are three wins from matching their win total of a season ago (43-119). They need to go 23-39 the rest of the way to avoid a fourth straight 100-loss season.

BLUE JAYS 1, WHITE SOX 0

TORONTO (AP) — Shane Bieber and three relievers combined on a four-hitter, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reached base three times and Toronto beat Chicago to snap its four-game winning streak.

Guerrero scored the only run on George Springer’s fourth-inning single as the Blue Jays beat the White Sox for the first time in five meetings.

Bieber (1-1) tossed six innings and struck out six to win for the first time in five starts this season. He allowed three hits, all doubles, and walked two.

Jeff Hoffman worked the seventh, Tyler Rogers pitched the eighth and All-Star closer Louis Varland finished for his 20th save in 20 chances.

The shutout was Toronto’s seventh this year.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, CARDINALS 3

PHOENIX (AP) — Nolan Arenado had a two-run double as he closes on 2,000 career hits, Brandon Pfaadt had another good day on the mound since returning from the minors and Arizona beat St. Louis.

The D-backs scored three runs in the third — all with two outs — to make it 4-0. Ketel Marte scored on a wild pitch and then Arenado delivered a two-run double down the left field line.

The 35-year-old Arenado is two hits shy of 2,000. The eight-time All-Star is playing his first season with the D-backs after five seasons with the Cardinals and eight with the Colorado Rockies.

Pfaadt (4-1) gave up two runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings, striking out three. He’s surrendered only five earned runs over 21 innings (2.14 ERA) in four starts since returning from a month-long stint in the minors.

Gabriel Moreno and Marte each added two hits for the D-backs, who have won five out of their last six. Paul Sewald earned his 23rd save in 24 chances despite giving up a solo homer to Jimmy Crooks.

All-Star right fielder Jordan Walker — who won the Home Run Derby on Monday — had an RBI single in the sixth to help the Cardinals cut the deficit to 5-2. JJ Wetherholt and Alec Burleson both had two hits.

RANGERS 7, BRAVES 6

ATLANTA (AP) — Brandon Nimmo’s two-run single in the sixth inning gave Texas the lead as it rallied from an early deficit to beat Atlanta in a matchup of first-place teams.

Texas left-hander MacKenzie Gore (6-8) gave up a two-run homer to Eli White in Atlanta’s four-run second inning and another homer to Michael Harris II the following inning. After giving up five runs in the first three innings, Gore gave up no more runs while pitching 5 2/3 innings.

All-Star left-hander Jacob Latz recorded the final four outs for his 19th save.

Evan Carter hit a two-run homer off Tyler Kinley (5-4) in the sixth as the Rangers pulled even at 5-5. Dylan Lee allowed infield singles to Wyatt Langford and Josh Jung before Nimmo’s two-run single up the middle gave the Rangers the lead. Nimmo drove in three runs with two hits.

Braves right-hander Owen Murphy allowed three runs, two earned, in 2 2/3 innings in his first major league start.

PHILLIES 6, METS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit his major league-leading 33rd home run, fellow All-Star Jesús Luzardo allowed two hits in five strong innings and Philadelphia defeated New York.

Trea Turner also went deep for the Phillies and finished 3 for 4 with a walk. He scored three times. Bryce Harper had a two-run single.

Tyrone Taylor homered for the last-place Mets.

The start of the game was moved up an hour to 3:05 p.m., due to the threat of storms. Play was halted in the bottom of the seventh because of rain and resumed after a 48-minute delay.

Luzardo (9-4) picked up where he left off in the first half this season, when he earned his first All-Star selection. After pitching a perfect inning Tuesday night during the Midsummer Classic in Philadelphia, he struck out seven and walked two. Taylor’s second-inning drive to left field and fourth-inning single were the only hits off the 25-year-old lefty.

On a hot, muggy afternoon with a game-time temperature of 87 degrees and lingering hazy skies due to the wildfires in Canada and Minnesota, interim manager Don Mattingly pulled Luzardo after 90 pitches.

Philadelphia scored four runs off Sean Manaea (2-5). Making his seventh start since rejoining the Mets’ rotation on June 13, Manaea gave up seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

ROYALS 6, PADRES 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez and Lane Thomas homered to help Kansas City beat San Diego.

Thomas hit a 421-foot two-run home run to left field off Griffin Canning in the first and Perez added a two-run shot, his 12th this season, to center field that capped the scoring in the sixth.

Perez, a 36-year-old catcher, has 315 career home runs, two shy of the franchise record held by Hall of Famer George Brett.

Jac Caglianone’s run-scoring double in the third extended his hit streak to nine games. Isaac Collins added an RBI single in the fourth and Vinnie Pasquantino singled to extend an on-base streak to 14 games.

Randy Dobnak allowed one run and four hits in 4 1/3 innings for the Royals. Daniel Lynch IV (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win.

Canning (1-8) allowed four runs and five hits with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

ORIOLES 4, ASTROS 2, 11 INNINGS

HOUSTON (AP) — Gunnar Henderson scored the tiebreaking run from second base on Tyler O’Neill’s infield single with two outs in the 11th inning, and Baltimore beat Houston for its sixth straight victory.

Baltimore’s winning streak is its longest since May 30 to June 5, 2025.

O’Neill beat the throw to first from second baseman Jose Altuve, allowing Henderson to score with ease. That left runners at first and second, and Leody Taveras followed with an RBI single off Enyel De Los Santos (0-3).

Yordan Alvarez hit a tying double for Houston in the bottom of the 10th, and the Astros loaded the bases with nobody out. But they failed to push across the winning run against Andrew Kittredge (1-1).

O’Neill threw out Nick Allen at the plate after catching Altuve’s flyball to shallow right field. With runners on second and third, LaMonte Wade Jr. tried to bunt for a hit and was thrown out at first.

Cam Sanders retired the side in order in the bottom of the 11th for his first major league save.

Orioles starter Trevor Rogers allowed one run and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings with a season-high eight strikeouts. He was removed with runners at the corners in the seventh, and Houston tied the score at 1 on Allen’s squeeze bunt against Rico Garcia.

BREWERS 8, MARLINS 6

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jackson Chourio put Milwaukee ahead with a two-run single in a four-run sixth inning that sent the Brewers past skidding Miami.

Garrett Mitchell added a two-run double in the sixth and finished with three hits for the banged-up Brewers, who erased an early 3-0 deficit. Milwaukee leads the NL Central by six games over the Chicago Cubs and sits a game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the majors.

Griffin Conine hit a three-run homer in the ninth for the Marlins, who have lost five straight following a six-game winning streak.

Trevor Megill entered after Conine’s homer off Craig Yoho and got three quick outs for his 15th save.

Brewers starter Shane Drohan (5-3) gave up three runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out nine and walked one.

Marlins reliever Calvin Faucher (4-5) yielded all four Milwaukee runs in the sixth as the Brewers took a 6-3 lead. Christian Yelich added a two-run double in the seventh.

MARINERS 4, GIANTS 3, 10 INNINGS

SEATTLE (AP) — Julio Rodríguez hit a walk-off sacrifice fly and Cole Young added a three-run home run to help Seattle beat San Francisco in 10 innings.

With one away and runners at first and third, Rodríguez hit a long fly ball to field off San Francisco reliever Dylan Smith (0-2). Giants left fielder Grant McCray had no play at home, and Victor Robles easily scored from third base.

Rodríguez was activated Saturday from the injured and served as Seattle’s designated hitter and went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts before his second career walk-off.

Bryce Eldridge opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third and the Giants took a 3-0 lead on solo shots by Rafael Devers, his 20th, and Willy Adames — his second in as many days — in the sixth. Devers notched his eighth major league season with at least 20 home runs.

Young hit a three-run shot off Giants starter Logan Webb in the seventh that made it 3-3 and broke Seattle’s streak of 15 consecutive scoreless innings to start the second half of the season.
