Retiring regional district public works manager turning hobby into second career

PENTICTON – More art is in the future of retiring Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen Public Works Manager Doug French.

French will be retiring from his position at the end of March, when Roger Huston joins the regional district to take over the public works reins.

French has been with the RDOS for five years. He’s been busy with water projects during his tenure, seeing the Okanagan Wastewater Treatment Plant go from design stage to commissioning, as well as taking the West Bench water system off the lake and connected to bulk water purchases from the Penticton treatment plant.

French also helped initiate the Similkameen River Watershed Plan, which is now into its third year and about to begin Phase three.

French plans to return to Squamish, where he worked prior to coming to the regional district. He plans to continue working with his art with the prospect of turning it into a second career. A number of his works currently decorate the walls of the regional district office.

French’s replacement is Roger Huston, a professional with 22 years experience in government. He will be starting on March 30.

Huston formerly held senior management positions in public works with the City of Grand Forks and the Village of Lumby.

Upcoming projects for Huston will include continuing development of the Similkameen Watershed Plan in addition to the containment of landfill gas at Campbell Mountain Landfill.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
