Suicide on Overlanders Bridge thwarted by police

KAMLOOPS – A Kamloops RCMP officer managed to talk down a suicidal man from the Overlanders Bridge Friday night.

Police were called at midnight about a distraught man standing on the water side of the railing in the middle of the bridge.

“An officer spoke to him about his struggles and was able to convince him to come back over the railing,” Staff Sgt. Fran Bethell said. “After several minutes of conversation he climbed back over the railing and onto the sidewalk.”

Police drove the man to Royal Inland Hospital for a medical assessment.
