Summerland grads flush with success following toilet fundraiser

Summerland high school grads are counting the cash following a successful and unique dry grad fundraising campaign.

Parent overseer Liz Piket says the 'toilet fairy’ campaign was completely organized by the kids, working in COVID-19 safe cohorts of between two and five students. For the last two weeks the students have organized themselves into 11 groups, painting and decorating an equal number of toilets.

“On the first night, each team picked a location to drop the toilet off at. Signage accompanying the toilet comes with the coordinator’s phone number and reads, 'You’ve been visited by the toilet fairy in a fundraiser for the Summerland dry grad. For $10 you can have the toilet picked up and for $20 you can have it donated to someone,’” Piket says.

Piket says it’s the second year for the fundraiser, which last took place in 2019. It turned out to be an ideal event in terms of being COVID-19 friendly, and was well received by the public.

“The kids have been going around the community picking up toilets and delivering them to the next person. Most people paid $20 dollars, some paid more. One family paid $100 to have the toilet taken away. People have been very positive about it,” she says.

The grads will be making their final rounds tonight.

Piket says the total amount raised hasn’t been fully calculated yet, but is probably between $2,500 and $3,000.
