Four new wildfires in the Kamloops Fire Centre

Fire crews are controlling a number of wildfires that broke out yesterday in the Kamloops Fire Centre.

Fire Information Officer Kayla Fraser says B.C. Wildfire assisted in containing three blazes in the Penticton area yesterday, April 22.

A fire on the Greyback Forest Service Road that broke out yesterday afternoon was probably the most visible fire in the area, reaching 1.4 ha before being declared ‘under control,’ this morning. Fraser says six firefighters are on scene today, putting out hot spots and patrolling the perimeter.

The wildfire service also assisted the Penticton Indian Band with a 4 ha blaze that broke out on Marron Valley Road. It is now considered being held, with three wildfire firefighters and a water tanker assisting Penticton Indian Band crews.

A third fire occurred on Chute Lake Road north of Naramata yesterday. Fraser says the fire reached .1 ha in size and is being patrolled by the Naramata Fire Department today.

Closer to Kamloops, the Six Mile Hill fire also broke out yesterday. That fire burned 2.5 ha and is considered under control today,

The Kamloops Fire Centre issued a wind warning yesterday, with forecast winds of light to moderate winds today. Kamloops could see southeast winds this afternoon at 20 km/h, while the Okanagan could see 20 to 40 km/h winds from the northwest.

Fraser reminds residents not to consider any kind of open burning if winds are a possibility.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
