Montreal Alouettes QB Alexander earns CFL player of the month honours

TORONTO — Montreal Alouettes quarterback Davis Alexander has been named the CFL’s player of the month for July.

The 27-year-old American earned the top honour on Wednesday following a month where he amassed 1,310 passing yards and seven total touchdowns.

Alexander was also named the league’s No. 2 star of the week after throwing for 420 yards with three majors in Montreal’s 34-13 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday.

Alouettes running back Travis Theis was also recognized for his standout performance in July, totalling 435 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Edmonton Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo was the third player named to the monthly list, earning the nod after putting up 1,813 passing yards and 11 TDs.

The CFL’s players of the week list was topped by B.C. Lions running back Zander Horvath, who posted career-highs in carries (17), rushing yards (191) and touchdowns (three) as B.C. beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 35-19 on Thursday.

Montreal receiver Tyson Philpot made the list after posting 184 receiving yards and becoming the fastest Canadian to reach 1,000 yards in a season, doing so in just eight games.
