UPDATE: Suspect in custody following threats made to Kamloops middle school

A suspect has been taken into custody after threats were made to a Kamloops middle school.

A person called Brock Middle School and made a threat, according to an RCMP news release, which led the school district and police to issue a "hold and secure" order for the middle school and nearby Kay Bingham Elementary.

At 12:20 p.m., May 11, School District 73 made notice of the hold and secure orders on the school websites, following consultations with Kamloops RCMP.

Brock Middle School and Kay Bingham Elementary School remained under hold and secure throughout the rest of the afternoon, with no one allowed to move into or out of the school while classes continued. Students were dismissed at their regular times, according to school websites.

“Police presence continued throughout the school day and during dismissal to help ensure the safety and security of students and staff as our investigation continues,” Kamloops RCMP officer in charge of operations Insp. Jeff Pelley said in the release.

Police say the hold and secure order was made out of an abundance of caution, and they now have a person in custody.

“The safety of our students remains our number one priority as our investigation advances,” Pelley said.

Updates for parents and guardians can be found on the school websites for Brock Middle here, and Kay Bingham Elementary here.
