Vernon RCMP rescue ‘Chocnut’ the Pomeranian in dognapping incident

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP were gratified to be able to help a Vernon woman recover her dog following a dognapping incident that ended happily for the victim.

RCMP were called to the 3000 block of 24 Avenue in Vernon yesterday, May 11, around 6:30 p.m., after receiving a report of a small Pomeranian dog being stolen from a resident’s yard.

The owner of the dog, known as "Chocnut,” had canvassed the neighbourhood and called police after a neighbour reported seeing a woman carrying a small Pomeranian away from the area.

Investigators were able to identify a suspect from information provided by the neighbour, and around 11 p.m., after checking several locations throughout the city, police located the woman, along with Chocnut, in the 25000 block of 27 Street.

The suspect was arrested and Chocnut returned to its owners.

"People often ask what the best part of being a police officer is. Well, this is it, helping people. We have an incredibly happy family who has their beloved pet back and we’re happy to have been a part of it," media relations officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP Chris Terleski said.

A 41-year-old Vernon woman was released from custody and police are continuing to investigate the incident, Const. Terleski said in a release issued this morning.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
