City of Vernon lifeguard supervisor recognized for saving lives

Gary Lefebvre, the aquatic supervisor for City of Vernon Recreation Services, is being recognized by the Lifesaving Society of BC & Yukon on March 29 in Vancouver for his role in rescuing three canoeists on Kalamalka Lake last summer.

Lefebvre was playing volleyball with family on the beach of Kalamalka Lake in the evening of August 7, 2013, when he heard a faint call for help. He noticed that a trio of canoeists had capsized their vessel, so he and three Vancouver Island-based youth immediately reacted. Only one of the canoeists was wearing a personal flotation device, and none were strong swimmers. Although the canoeists were all brought safely to shore, Lefebvre said it was obvious that they were all frightened by the events, and without the intervention of Lefebvre and the three youth, the outcome might have been much worse.

Lefebvre, who has an extensive career in lifeguard competition and training, said he was gratified that his training could help someone in need.  However, he also took time to remind others that everyone has a role to play in water safety and awareness.

“It is a privilege to be included in this year’s Honour and Rescue Awards, but anyone can prevent drowning by putting on a lifejacket before stepping in a boat or by signing your kids up for swimming lessons at the local pool,” said Lefebvre.
