Brewers add catcher Bo Naylor and reliever JoJo Romero to their active roster

CHICAGO (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers added catcher Bo Naylor and reliever JoJo Romero to their active roster on Tuesday.

Naylor was recalled from Triple-A Nashville before Milwaukee’s 9-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Romero was reinstated from the 15-day injured list after recovering from an appendectomy.

Active MLB rosters expanded from 26 to 28 players on Tuesday.

Milwaukee acquired Naylor and Romero in a pair of trade-deadline deals. Naylor came over in a trade with Cleveland, and Romero was acquired in a swap with St. Louis.

Naylor’s promotion puts a third catcher on the roster for the NL Central leaders, joining William Contreras and Gary Sánchez.

“It gives us a chance to use Gary as a (designated hitter) more,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “And it gives … a left-handed bat to the offensive mix. He’s got a lot of major league experience. He has to learn our pitchers and he’s really open to it. Seems like just a tremendous, tremendous kid.”

Naylor, 26, has struggled offensively the past three seasons. He hit .143 with two homers in 28 games with the Guardians before he was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on May 9.

The Brewers got Romero and right-hander Dustin May from St. Louis for two minor league outfielders on Aug. 3.

Romero, who turns 30 on Sept. 9, got two outs in the sixth in his first big league game since July 12. The left-hander is 1-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 45 appearances this year.
