B.C.’s police watchdog called to investigate RCMP involvement in fatal crash near Sicamous
The province’s police watchdog will be looking into a motor vehicle crash near Sicamous that resulted in a fatality.
The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia following a single vehicle collision that took place yesterday afternoon, May 20, according to an RCMP media release.
A vehicle was seen passing multiple vehicles, including an unmarked police vehicle, while travelling east on Highway 1 near Salmon Arm.
A police officer attempted to stop the vehicle in Canoe, near Salmon Arm, but the driver allegedly failed to stop.
Sicamous RCMP members were contacted and officers attempted to stop the vehicle on Highway 1 near the Bruhn Bridge in Sicamous. The suspect vehicle left the road coming to a rest nearby.
A female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene by members of emergency health services. The male driver was transported to hospital with serious injuries.
B.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal collision. The Independent Investigations Office is determining whether police actions are linked to the woman’s death and the man’s injuries.
RCMP said all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be subject to the independent investigation and as the matter is now under investigation, no further information will be released.
