Blue Jays claim catcher Shawn Ross off waivers from Mets
TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays claimed catcher Shawn Ross off waivers from the New York Mets on Saturday.
Ross was then optioned to triple-A Buffalo.
The 26-year-old made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier this season, appearing in two contests at the MLB level before being claimed by the Mets.
In 70 games across the triple-A and double-A levels this season, Ross has a .184 batting average, 13 doubles, 11 home runs and 29 RBI, while throwing out 14 runners behind the plate.
Ross was signed by the Pirates as a non-drafted free agent in 2022 out of Clarendon Junior College. Over four seasons and 285 minor-league games in the Pirates and Mets systems, Ross has a .189 batting average, 39 doubles, 53 home runs and 148 RBI.
Later in the day, Toronto recalled left-hander Ricky Tiedemann from Buffalo and placed right-hander Jameson Taillon on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation.
