Rays place LHP Garrett Cleavinger on 15-day IL with forearm tightness

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays placed left-handed reliever Garrett Cleavinger on the 15-day injured list before Saturday night’s game against the Texas Rangers with forearm tightness and called up right-hander Ty Johnson from Triple-A Durham.

Cleavinger is 4-4 with a 4.79 ERA in 51 appearances. He pitched in the Rays’ 7-6 win over Texas on Friday night, allowing two hits — including a grand slam by Elías Díaz — and one walk without retiring a batter.

Johnson, who was born about 45 miles east of Globe Life Field in Rockwall, Texas, was 4-1 with a 3.03 ERA for Durham in 21 games, including 10 starts. He is looking to make his major league debut.

To make room for Johnson on Tampa Bay’s 40-man roster, infielder Oliver Dunn was designated for assignment.
