TORONTO — Thousands of fans screamed and chanted as K-pop superstar Lisa arrived on the red carpet of the Toronto International Film Festival to debut a new documentary about her solo career.

“Always Lalisa,” directed by Sue Kim, offers an intimate look at the Blackpink singer’s career during the year she spent away from the pop quartet.

Speaking on the red carpet Friday, Kim said Lisa truly immersed herself in the process, allowing the crew to capture every moment as it happened.

Coincidentally, Rebel Wilson was also in town promoting “Girl Group,” a film she wrote, directed and starred in alongside Jennifer Coolidge.

Wilson plays a pop singer who winds up making some ill-advised choices when she takes a hiatus from her hit band to attempt a solo career.

“The Julia Set,” starring Chase Infinity, also made its world premiere Friday. The film follows Infiniti as a gifted university student who gets romantically entangled with a teaching assistant.

As for Cancon, Paralympian Rick Hansen was on deck to promote the documentary “Man In Motion: The Rick Hansen Story.”

The film chronicles Hansen’s quest to wheel 40,000 kilometres through 34 countries in the 1980s. Actor Ryan Reynolds produced the film, though he wasn’t in attendance Friday.

It’s one of several films spotlighting activists with disabilities at this year’s edition of TIFF.

“It’s such an honour, first of all, to be included with two people who I knew, Judith Heumann, a great American and global human rights activist, and Terry Fox was a dear friend and played on the wheelchair basketball team,” Hansen said on the carpet.

“Being Heumann,” about a 28-day sit-in that led to major civil rights changes for Americans with disabilities, opened the festival on Thursday night, and “Run Terry Run” is due to screen on Saturday.

Also Friday, Jay Baruchel walked the red carpet at the premiere of “The Stunt Driver,” a comedy about a Canadian daredevil.

Baruchel plays Ken Carter, a real-life stuntman known as “The Mad Canadian” who tried to drive a rocket-powered car over the St. Lawrence River in the 1970s.

The film, premiering amid heightened tensions between Canada and the United States, is billed as an underdog story as Carter attempts to outdo his American rival Evel Knievel.
