Similkameen wildfires keep fire crews busy

The Similkameen has been a wildfire hotspot over the past two days.

Kamloops Fire Centre fire information officer Kayla Pepper says wildfire personnel assisted the Keremeos Fire Department yesterday afternoon, May 24, after a structure fire spread to nearby brush on VLA Road in Cawston.

The fire is classified as under control today, after reaching a size of 0.6 ha.

Wildfire personnel are also on scene at a second blaze this afternoon, May 25.

The Knighthawk wildfire is estimated at 0.8 ha in size and is classified as out of control.

Seven personnel are fighting the blaze with 10 more on the way.

Firefighting efforts are supported by a water tender. Air tankers also actioned the blaze earlier this afternoon.

No structures are threatened by the fire, which is located about 20 km southeast of Keremeos, just of Highway 3.

Pepper says the fire is very visible from Highway 3, and traffic warning signs are being placed on the highway.
