Thunder, lightning, rain, hail, high winds all possible in Okanagan, Kamloops today
A vigorous low pressure system is forecast to move through the Thompson and Okanagan valleys today bringing rain, winds and possible thunderstorms.
Environment Canada meteorologist Lisa Erven says to expect showers to start sometime this morning or early afternoon, May 27, in Kamloops and the Okanagan.
Generalized precipitation of between five to 10 millimetres of rain is possible throughout the region, Erven says.
“The unstable atmosphere could breed thunderstorms and as the cold front moves through, there is a potential for localized thunderstorms that could bring increased precipitation, possible hail and wind gusts to 70 km/h,” Erven says.
The unsettled conditions are expected through this afternoon and evening, with highs today reaching 19 Celsius in Kamloops, Vernon and Kelowna, and 17 C in Penticton.
Erven says a few showers and clouds may still be lingering on Friday, but an incoming high pressure ridge will result in steadily improving weather through the weekend and into next week.
“Friday will be a transitional day as the low pressure system moves into Alberta and a high pressure ridge begins to build. Temperatures on Friday are expected to range between 17 C and 21 C, but it’s expected to warm up steadily after that, with a high of 29 C in the Okanagan, and 28 C in Kamloops by Sunday,” Erven says.
Summer-like conditions are expected into next week, with highs in the 30s for Kamloops and the Okanagan to start the work week.
