First ever B.C. Trails Day on June 5
An inaugural celebration of British Columbia trails takes place this Saturday.
Outdoor recreation groups across the province are uniting to celebrate, educate and care for B.C.’s trail systems on B.C. Trails Day on Saturday, June 5.
The Outdoor Recreation Council of British Columbia is leading the charge through its partnership with volunteer groups, public and land agencies in an effort to help more residents enjoy the province’s trails and outdoor spaces, according to a media release.
Events are planned for more than 20 B.C. communities so far, including Penticton, Merritt, Logan Lake, Armstrong and Kelowna.

"Through this pandemic, trails have been the outlet for outdoor enthusiasts everywhere, but most notably in B.C. In the North Okanagan, we have all experienced a record number of trail users with some trails seemingly bursting at the seams with hikers, bikers, and horseback riders all looking to escape COVID restrictions. This event raises awareness of the importance our trails had on our mental and physical health when everything else in our lives paused,” Vernon North Okanagan Cycling Society’s Executive Director Bridget Grant said in a media release.
Outdoor groups and communities are encouraged to host local COVID-19 safe events, such as recreational outings, trail stewardship projects or even virtual events.
"Over the past year, British Columbians have turned to community trails and green spaces to stay healthy and to boost their connection to nature and community. There are more recreation users on the trails than ever, and that means more wear and tear. BC Trails Day is an opportunity to come together to give back to the trails we love and bring attention to the many benefits that they provide,”Outdoor Recreation Council Executive Director Louise Pedersen said in the release.
