Penticton Vees raffles benefit kid’s breakfast and women’s charitable programs

PENTICTON – Penticton Vees “Wicked Wednesdays” events have been a big help to the Penticton Speedway Foundation’s fundraising efforts.

The Penticton Speedway Foundation teamed up with the Vees and Underwriters Insurance,  raising more than $15,000 through a number of raffles that took place in conjunction with Wicked Wednesdays promotions. The promotions were part of Penticton Vees hockey games at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

This is the second year in a row for the fund raising raffle effort, as used cars, home entertainment packages, furniture packages and suites at the SOEC were raffled off for $2 per ticket.

The Penticton Rotary Club also assisted in selling the raffle tickets, which last year raised more than $16,000. The funds raised went to local breakfast programs and the South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS).

Breakfast programs at Carmi Elementary received $2,902, while Kettle Valley Railway Middle School received $1,500.

A Meals on Wheels program, (which included Queens Park, Columbia, and West Bench Elementary Schools) received $4,063, and Parkway Elementary benefitted from a donation of $2,944, for a total disbursement of 11,409, while SOWINS received $4,045.5.

The Penticton Speedway Foundation raises more than $30,000 annually through year round fundraising efforts which benefit local initiatives, organizations and families in need in the community.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
