Heat wave coming to an end in Kamloops, Okanagan

The hottest weather so far this year peaked this week as temperatures are forecast to ease from the record-breaking highs of yesterday.

Kelowna, Penticton and Vernon all set daily high temperature records yesterday, June 2, as did Kamloops, which broke the city’s 131-year-old record of 35.6 Celsius, set in 1961, with a high of 36 C yesterday.

These cities set the following new record highs for June 2, according to Environment Canada:

  • Vernon, 35.6, beat old record of 34.4 C set in 2007
  • Kelowna, 36.2 C, beat old record of 34.5 C, set in 2007
  • Summerland, tied old record of 33.9, set in 1970
  • Penticton, 35.3 C, beat old record of 33.9, set in 1961
  • Osoyoos, 36.2 C, beat old record of 35 C set in 1970

Princeton also set a new high temperature record yesterday at 33.4 C, which beat the old record of 33.3 C set in 1970.

Kamloops and Okanagan residents could be putting away the sunscreen and getting out umbrellas on the weekend as Environment Canada is forecasting the possibility of precipitation and temperatures up to 17 degrees cooler than yesterday’s highs.

Some cloud is creeping into tomorrow’s forecast with a highs around 27 C.

A low pressure system moving across the region Saturday is expected to bring a good chance of showers to Kamloops and the Okanagan, along with temperatures a few degrees below normal for this time of year, highs around 19 C.

A mix of sun and cloud is expected Sunday along with a high of around 20 C.

There’s a  60 per cent chance of showers on Monday with highs around 18 C.

Normal temperatures for this time of year in Kamloops and the Okanagan are highs of around 23 C and lows of about 10 C.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
