Two months of road work set to begin on Columbia Corridor in Kamloops

Construction to the Columbia Corridor is starting next week in Kamloops and drivers should expect two months of delays.

Repaving work, water main upgrades and traffic signal upgrades will begin on June 14 in the area of Columbia Street West, according to a City of Kamloops news release.

The city expects a minimum on lane in each direction to remain open through the work zones, but a detour route will be provided when lanes are unavailable. Motorists should expect congestion and plan accordingly throughout the duration of the project, the city said.

There are three parts to the Columbia Corridor project, which include milling and repaving of Columbia Street West between McGill Road and Notre Dame Drive. Notre Dame Drive between Columbia Street West and Summit Drive will be milled and repaved, with modified right-turn channels at the Notre Dame and Summit Drive intersection.

Water main upgrades will be completed along Notre Dame Drive from Columbia Street West to Summit Drive.

Lastly, traffic signal upgrades will be coming to the Notre Dame Drive and Columbia Street West intersection.

Heavily impactful portions of the project will be done through the night to minimize traffic delays, the city said.

Drivers can anticipate electronic signage, social media, the city's website, traffic webcams and advertisements to inform the public of delays, closures or disruptions in traffic.

Pedestrian access will be maintained through the work zones, and the city of Kamloops encourages commuters and motorists to consider using other transportation modes like transit, cycling or walking as the work continues through to August.

BA Dawson Blacktop is the city's prime contractor for the construction work.
