iN VIDEO: Penticton’s lakeside dancer lifting spirits

Penticton resident Katie Henderson has been adding a new entertainment dimension to Okanagan Lake Beach in Penticton for the past couple of months.

The Penticton dancer is becoming well known among Okanagan Lake promenade walkers for her energetic dance moves on the boardwalk.

Henderson says she started coming down to the beach to practise her moves a couple of months ago, after her gym pass ran out.

“Everything was shut down due to COVID-19, and I ran out of space at home, so I thought I would go practise where it’s free and I can give people some entertainment. People have been stuck inside for so long now because of the pandemic, and everyone’s sad,” she says.

As the weather has warmed up, Henderson has been making daily trips to the waterfront to practise, sometimes just using her headphones and cell phone to play the music.

She says she can usually be found on the boardwalk between the Peach Concession and Patio Burger and Ice Cream Co.

A recent social media post of a video of her dancing on the beach was responded to by a string of compliments and notes of familiarity from waterfront walkers who are used to seeing her.

"I knew it was you," says one post, while another says,"Go, girl," and another, "I love this."

“I was quite overwhelmed with the response,” Henderson says.

She runs online dance classes and is a freelance teacher. She’s taught at the Vault Dance Complex in Penticton as well as the Balance School of Performing Arts.

And she’s relieved COVID-19 restrictions are lifting.

“Now I can officially start planning classes again,” she says.
