Fire near Lytton spread across steep terrain, BC Wildfire Service says

The blaze south of Lytton has grown to 350 hectares, BC Wildfire Service says.

The fire, which has been renamed the George Road fire, is currently classified as out of control.

"Due to the lower fire activity and better visibility on the fire yesterday, our crews were able to fly around the perimeter of the fire, to get an accurate size of the fire. Since this fire is burning in very steep and rocky terrain, the fire has been burning in a very scattered pattern, creating many different fingers and spots," reads the update from the Wildfire Service.

Today there are 77 firefighters, nine helicopters, two pieces of heavy equipment and two water tenders on site.

"Ground crews and helicopters made good progress on the fire yesterday, taking advantage of the cooler weather. As we move into hotter and drier weather, we are working with our partners and land managers to create a long term management and monitor strategy for the upper areas of the fire that our ground crews cannot act due to safety concerns," the service said.  

Evacuation alerts have been issued by Thompson-Nicola Regional District and the Lytton First Nation for 10 homes in the area.
