Famous Kamloops bottle picker dies from heat-related complications

Residents of Kamloops are mourning the unexpected death of a local bottle picker named Wayne Brennan.

Brennan had been a fixture in Kamloops for decades, covering several kilometres every day, by foot, collecting bottles. He died in his North Shore home on June 30 due to heat-related complications. He was 71 years old.

Brennon has been described by the community as hardworking, friendly, kind and sweet. A man who was always on the go and always had a smile on his face.

Rob Emery’s parents lived close to Brennan and his wife Katherine. Emery says his parents were good friends with the couple and were there to help them with errands across the years.

“Katherine called my dad on Wednesday night around 10 p.m.,” Emery said. “Dad called 911 and the first responders did everything they could but they couldn’t bring Wayne back. We are very sad about this loss. Wayne was like family to us. It hurts to see Katherine getting removed from the home because she doesn’t have the mental capability to live on her own.”

Katherine is now under the care of the John Howard Society, who is setting up new living arrangements for her.

Emery was able to contact the manager at General Grants Bottle Depot to ensure Brennan’s account remains open. The public is encouraged to drop cans and bottles at all General Grant’s locations, with proceeds going to Katherine.

Emery is currently working on ideas for a memorial for Brennan. His parents are waiting for a call from Brennan’s brother in Vancouver who will take over management of the remains at Drake’s Funeral Home.

“One idea would be to hold a memorial at the house Wayne and Katherine have been living in,” Emery said. “Wayne always had a few carts. We could put the carts out and people could bring cans and bottles instead of flowers. The proceeds would go to Katherine.”
