B.C. firefighters continue to make progress on wildfire northwest of Kamloops

A wildfire burning to the southwest of Kamloops did not see any growth overnight.

The Durand Lake wildfire, located roughly 28 kilometres southwest of Kamloops, remains at 277 hectares in size, said B.C. Wildfire information officer Aydan Coray.

Yesterday, July 9, 48 personnel were on scene fighting the blaze alongside two helicopters and multiple pieces of heavy equipment, she said.

Part of an evacuation order issued by the Thompson Nicola Regional District for residents in Electoral Area J (Copper Desert Country) has been downgraded to an evacuation alert.

The fire is still classified as out of control, but crews made good progress on the fire yesterday.

Two days ago, firefighters constructed a fireguard around the wildfire and crews have been reinforcing it since then with hose lay, Coray said.

This fire is suspected to be caused by lightning and is still classified as out of control.
