Work on waterfront walkway resumes

PENTICTON – A more widened walkway will enhance visitors and residents useage of the Okangan Lake waterfront during the coming summer days.

The reconstruction of Penticton’s lakefront walkway began for another season today, March 9.

The walkway reconstruction project, which began in 2013 and officially opened last year, will connect The Peach with Kiwanis Pier. A 10 foot wide concrete walkway along with amenities like energy efficient lighting, seating and landscaping will be constructed in addition to a patterned concrete plaza surrounding The Peach.

Mayor Andrew Jakubeit said the project length might be small, but the project should have a big return in terms of public use and enjoyment.

“Having that wide walkway continuous from The Peach to the Lakeside Resort Hotel will help people with strollers and wheelchairs enjoy the entire path,” he said.

The existing walkway and plaza will be closed during the construction, which is expected to be completed by mid-June.

Pedestrians accessing the Penticton Lakeside Resort, Kiwanis Pier or Okanagan Lake Park from Rotary Park during the month of May will be redirected along Lakeshore Drive, because of the narrow corridor adjacent the lake. Washrooms at Peach Plaza will stay open with access obtained from the east side of the park.
