‘It’s still there,’ Logan Lake mayor passes along message after wildfire reaches town’s borders

The mayor of a small Interior community has a message this morning on the status of Logan Lake after wildfire reached its borders last night, “it’s still there.”

The Tremont Creek wildfire, burning to the north of the District of Logan Lake, exhibited significant growth to the south and east yesterday, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service’s latest update from last night.

“The fire’s edge is now within the northern boundary of the District of Logan Lake. Air tankers have been supporting throughout the afternoon and remain on scene. Ground crews, structure protection personnel and fire apparatus are established in Logan Lake to protect from ember cast and will maintain a 24-hour presence,” according to the service.

This morning, Aug. 15, Clearwater Mayor Merlin Blackwell said in a tweet he had a message from Logan Lake’s Mayor Robin Smith. Logan Lake is “still there,” he wrote. Smith could not be immediately reached for comment.

Last night, Highland Valley Copper mine was placed under an evacuation order due to the wildfire. An evacuation order was already issued for the District of Logan Lake a few days ago.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District has issued evacuation orders and alerts for various areas of Electoral Area 'I' (Blue Sky Country) and Electoral Area 'J' (Copper Desert Country). An expanded Evacuation Alert was issued today, August 14, for South of Logan Lake in Electoral Area "I" (Blue Sky Country) and Electoral Area "M" (Beautiful Nicola Valley-North).

The Ashcroft Indian Band and Village of Ashcroft have issued evacuation alerts as a precautionary measure.

The Oregon Jack Creek Indian Band has issued an evacuation order.
