Penticton’s highly anticipated 2021 Ironman triathlon cancelled

Penticton’s Ironman triathlon will not be happening in 2021.

In April, the event was postponed by one month, scheduled to take place in late September rather than late August. But in light of new COVID restrictions, the event had to postpone once again.

“Unfortunately, due to the updated British Columbia Interior Health restrictions for events hosting more than 100 people, we regret to share that the 2021 IRONMAN Canada – Penticton triathlon cannot take place on September 26, 2021,” reads a release issued today, Aug. 23, by Ironman Canada.

“The event is now scheduled to return on Aug. 28, 2022.”

Penticton was the host city to the Ironman Triathlon from 1983 to 2012. The City struck a deal with organizers in 2019 to have the event return in 2020, but that was also cancelled because of COVID.

“This is certainly not the news any of us wanted especially at this point in time and we recognize that this latest setback is a significant disappointment after multiple event updates. Our goal remains to put on an exceptional event that meets the expectations of our athletes and host community," Ironman Canada said in the release.
