Quebec man killed in Oliver after jumping into highway traffic
Witnesses north of Oliver called police to report a man acting erratically along Highway 97 last night, moments before other witnesses called to say a man had jumped into moving traffic.
The first call came in at 10:38 p.m., Aug. 24, when Oliver RCMP were told of a man yelling and jumping in front of traffic on the highway near Seacrest Hill Road, according to an RCMP media release.
“Minutes later a second call was received after the man allegedly jumped in front of and was struck by a southbound van on Highway 97 near Sportsman’s Bowl Road,” the release reads. “The collision threw the man into the northbound lane where he was struck by a second vehicle.”
RCMP said witnesses immediately started CPR on the man and first responders continued with life saving efforts, but the man’s injuries were “grave” and he died shortly later in hospital. He was a 27-year-old resident of Quebec.
The unexpected death is being investigated by the B.C. Coroners Service, RCMP said, adding no more details will be released.
