Rope rescue required in crash near Sun Peaks

SUN PEAKS – Two people in their twenties are lucky to be alive after their car went off the road and down an embankment, coming to rest in a stand of trees Wednesday.

Kamloops rural RCMP say the woman at the wheel of her mother's silver Nissan was coming around the corner at the 32 kilometre mark of Tod Mountain Road and heading toward Heffley Creek when she slammed on the brakes and lost control. The car went off the road and down the grassy embankment but was prevented from further descent once it hit the wall of trees. The accident happened at around 12:30 p.m.

Const. Rod Eaket says the vehicle was so bashed up in the accident, he could only say it was a Nissan—not which model it was. Other officers commented the woman was hesitant to contact her mother as the borrowed vehicle was destroyed.

A man in the passenger seat climbed out and made his way up the embankment to the highway. Rescue personnel conducted a rope rescue to free the woman from the car. She was carried out on a spine board. Both received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at Royal Inland Hospital.

RCMP say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The occupants are from out of the area, Eaket said.
