Another record day in the Interior

THOMPSON-OKANAGAN – This will probably come as little surprise, but it was another record day in the Southern Interior, with a handful of communities setting new records Thursday.

At 19.6 Celsius Penticton just surpassed a century-old record Thursday while Summerland hit 19 C, well above the previous high temperature record of 16.7 C also set back in 1910. Osoyoos set a new record as well, with a high of 20.9 C Thursday, March 12.

Penticton could again hit a record today with Environment Canada forecasting a high of 17 C. The mercury is expected to drop a couple degrees over the weekend as a chance of rain moves over the entire region.

Kelowna and Vernon can both expect highs of 16 C today, Friday, March 13, several degrees below record temperatures while Kamloops will also be below current records with a high of 18 C expected today.

Heading into spring break next week temperatures will remain in the mid-teens and the sun is expected to come back out.

For those heading into the backcountry over the break be aware the avalanche risk has increased and currently sits at a moderate to considerable risk at the treeline and alpine levels. Rain is expected on several Interior highways overnight as well.
