These Penticton off-roaders aren’t just talking about garbage in the bush

While many local residents in Kamloops and the Okanagan complain about trash piling up in the bush, one community is doing something about it.

Later this week, volunteers in the Penticton area are being invited to join in the clean-up efforts up Carmi Road.

Anybody interested in participating in the Carmi Clean Up is invited to meet at the Wholesale Club in Penticton at 10 a.m. on Sept. 30, before the crew make their way to the outskirts of the city.

The clean-up is being organized by Jordan Tomlin, who is an avid off-roader. He goes up Carmi often, and can’t help but notice how much garbage has accumulated over the course of the summer. Messes are often a result of people who left their garbage and items behind after camping.

The idea was first planned through the Penticton Off-Roading Club, as members are growing tired of seeing messes all over the trails and land.

“Anything you can think of is up there – from trailers that have no axles left, to fridges, general garbage, vehicles – all kinds of trash.”

Tomlin hopes for a big turnout, and that the clean-up will become an annual event.

“Come with garbage bags, gloves, trailer, pick up truck, hitches, anything that you think will help, please bring,” Tomlin posted to the event on Facebook.

“If you can get other people/other groups to come help you get extra brownie points.”

Campfire bans have been lifted so there can will be a toasty mid-clean lunch. Although vaccine passports are not required, attendees are asked to be mindful.
