The bottom line: How unimpressed is council with downtown garden?

PENTICTON — Council thought they had the last word on the unrenewed downtown garden, but community organizers are ready to show their green thumbs.

Councillor John Vassilaki said they were not impressed with the way the garden was left.

The city issued a temporary use permit to the Penticton Urban Agriculture Association for a plot of land downtown at Ellis Street and Nanaimo Street to be transformed into a community garden. Council voted to not renew the agreement, which was originally issued in 2011. The three-year agreement expires in June.

The Agriculture Association will give a presentation at tonight’s city council meeting about its plans to improve the garden and hope the changes will encourage council to reconsider the agreement.

The Agriculture Association has worked in part with the Downtown Penticton Association who is in favour of the changes and renewing the agreement.
