UPDATE: Six families homeless after townhouse fire

LAKE COUNTRY – Fire investigators continue to look for the exact cause of the fire at a townhouse complex in Lake Country that has left six families homeless.

Fire chief Steve Windsor says the blaze started Sunday afternoon when someone started a car parked in the driveway of one of the end units on Powley Court, just off Bottom Wood Lake Road.

The flames quickly spread to a second car in the driveway then up the side of the townhouse and into the attic.

It’ll be a long time before the family in the end unit will be able to return home. It needs a major rebuild.

The neighbouring unit suffered significant water and smoke damage and it will months before the owners can get back inside.

According to Windsor, restoration companies are working on the smoke damage in 4 other units in the eighteen-unit complex. Those families should be able to return home fairly soon.

The strata council’s insurance company is sending a fire investigator from Vancouver to look into the blaze.
