Victim in South Okanagan shooting was targeted: RCMP

A gunshot victim was found by police outside a residence in the Indian Rock community, north of Naramata this morning, in what appears to be a targeted shooting.

Police were on the scene in response to a complaint of shots fired at approximately 7:30 a.m. today, Oct. 26, where they found the victim conscious and asking for help, according to an RCMP media release.

The 36-year-old male victim, known to police, was taken to an area hospital with a confirmed gunshot wound and non-life-threatening injuries, RCMP said.

The scene and surrounding community had a heavy police presence from local and neighbouring areas, including Air Services and Police Dog Services. Roadblocks were set up and citizens were directed to stay clear and report anything suspicious.

A vehicle fire was located a distance away, and is currently being investigated to determine if it’s related, RCMP said.

“Investigators are actively gathering evidence, and can confirm this appears to be a targeted shooting, and directly related to the drug subculture,” Penticton RCMP media liason officer Const. James Grandy said in the release. “Our officers were on scene within minutes and able to determine this was an isolated, targeted incident and not a random shooting.

"We want to assure the community there’s no evidence of ongoing risk, and to continue to report any suspicious person or vehicle to our detachment."

RCMP are not releasing any more information to the pubic citing the ongoing investigation.
