Stuck hiker coached off of trail by emergency crews
KAMLOOPS – An overzealous hiker was coached off a trail by firefighters and RCMP members after he got stuck on a trail near the cliffs overlooking Brock Estates off Ord Road this afternoon.
"It wasn't that steep. He kinda just froze on the side of the hill," Capt. Brian Lannon with Kamloops Fire Rescue said.
RCMP were the first on scene around 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 16, after dispatch directed a rope rescue, but Lannon said the rope wasn't required as crews were able to coach the middle-aged man, who was dressed in sneakers and track pants, down from the hillside.
Lannon said the man was hiking with relatives when he got stranded. His family called 9-1-1.
Now that people are starting to participate in more outdoor activities, Lannon advises to take considerations when hiking and not take on areas that are too steep or dangerous and to prepare for conditions.
Around this time last year, a woman was stranded a little bit further west, near Cinnamon Ridge. Kamloops Fire Rescue brought her to safety by rope after she slipped and fell on her hike. Her daughter attributed part of the fall to inappropriate footwear.

These trails may look easy from the road but in fact they are steep with lots of loose dirt and gravel. You must be very careful and do not under-estimate your own hiking abilities. Wear good reliable footwear and always take your cell phone with you and last but not least…let someone know where your going and when youll be back!
