Styrofoam recycling again on menu

KAMLOOPS – While we are not getting the provincial curb side program we are getting three new depots in Kamloops, each of which will take items like styrofoam not currently accepted for recycling with our curb side and depot programs.

“It’s not starting the way we thought,” Mayor Peter Milobar said Tuesday. “They (MMBC) are fulfilling the needs for depots, but not curb side (in Kamloops.)”

Curb side will continue as is in Kamloops but beginning next Monday, May 19, Multi Material B.C. will begin operating three new depots. They will be located at the Lorne Street bottle depot on Halston Avenue and both General Grants locations (North Shore and Downtown.)

In addition to the items already accepted both curb side and at the city depots the provincial depots will also accept styrofoam, tetra packs and aerosol cans.

Milobar also joked about about making sure everyone inundates the new depots with items in an effort to make the provincial curb side program come to the city sooner, though he noted those actions could have opposite the desired affect.

The city first rejected the program because of how much information was unknown but once the program was able to provide answers for most of those questions decided to sign up. In March they found out they were rejected for the program, with the managing director saying the decision was made because Kamloops originally declined the incentive.
