Caring Merritt cop goes above and beyond to rescue pets for evacuated owners

A Merritt RCMP officer has earned the nickname Pet Detective has he finds and rescues animals from homes evacuated by flooding.

Const. David Feller has been working double-duty to get pets back to their families after residents in Merritt and the surrounding areas were displaced by flooding, Nov. 15.

When the City issued an evacuation order, some homeowners were unable pack up their animals in time, according to an RCMP media release.

Const. Feller has been busy rescuing birds, cats, lizards and hamsters. He reached out to residents through his own social media account and provided his personal contact information for anyone whose animals need help, RCMP said.

“Dave has been an amazing support to the community as we work through the floods,” Merritt RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Josh Roda said in the release. “We are lucky to have him as a part of our close-knit team.”

The Merritt detachment has been receiving donations of pet food and supplies from local businesses to keep the constable in the pet rescue business.
