Survey seeks public input on Nicol memorial

VERNON – City Hall is looking to the community for ways to honour and remember Coun. Patrick Nicol, who died in January.

Tanya Laing Gahr, the city’s communications coordinator, says countless stories about Nicol’s kindness, generosity and his love of Vernon and its people have been shared in the weeks since his death after a long battle with cancer.

Now, the city has set up an online survey asking the public how they would like to see him memorialized. Coun. Juliette Cunningham, who sat next to Nicol in council chambers, is heading the committee that will oversee the process.

“He was absolutely dedicated to the individual citizen and their right to be heard and informed,” Cunningham said.

The committee is seeking suggestions that reflect Nicol’s values, can be accessed by the entire community and that build on existing city infrastructure.

The deadline for submissions is April 11, 2014.

Once all of the suggestions have been collected, an open house will be held in late April to discuss the submissions, at which point the public will be given a second opportunity to vote on the selections.
