Molotov cocktail scorches elementary school

North Okanagan RCMP are concerned someone in the community has gained a taste for Molotov cocktails.

For the second time in two weeks, Silver Star Elementary school has been targeted with a Molotov cocktail. RCMP are calling it attempted arson or at the very least mishief. Police were notified Friday morning, but spokesperson Gord Molendyk says the explosive device was thrown the previous evening.

"There was a small burn as a result," Molendyk says. "The evidence was still there, a broken bottle with a rag."

Molendyk says the fire burned itself out and harmed no one.

Last week, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a parked car in Coldstream. RCMP aren't sure if the incidents are connected.

"We don't know if we have some individual in our community that has, for some reason, taken a liking to throwing Molotov cocktails," Molendyk says. "We'd like to put a stop to it before something major happens."

The school and the RCMP are asking anyone who sees suspicious activity around the schools to call it in. They are asking who knows anything about this to please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or the police detachment.
