Vernon RCMP are alerting citizens to an email scam posing as a tax refund notification. The email appears to be from Canada Customs and Revenue Agency.

"It looks very authentic," Gord Molendyk, spokesperson for the RCMP, said.

After receiving several calls about the scam, RCMP are warning residents to watch out and read their emails with a critical eye.

Molendyk said the email has grammar and punctuation errors in it, a red flag typical of most internet scams.

"Here is another example of individuals attempting to get money from our honest residents," Molendyk said.

The criminals behind the scam are "phishing" for personal information such as credit card details, usernames and passwords. Aside from accessing bank accounts, the individuals can also commit identity theft if they acquire enough information.
