Injured snowmobiler rescued in Greystokes

KELOWNA – A snowmobiler rode off a cliff in the Greystokes area east of Kelowna Saturday severely injuring his leg.

B.C. Ambulance and Central Okanagan Search and Rescue were dispatched, but finding the victim proved tougher than it should have been.

The original ping from the cell phone call to 9-11 gave the location as the Lumby area. The second ping confirmed it the call came from the Greystokes region.

The Central Okanagan SAR volunteers happened to be training, but stood down when the injured man was brought out by his friends to a waiting ambulance.

“We would like to remind everyone that if they are going into the backcountry to have a phone with them, but don’t rely on the phone to be providing you the correct coordinates,” COSAR vice president Duane Tresnich says.

“Always carry a GPS with you and use that to get the correct coordinates for your location.”
