VIDEO: Radio station burns $5,000 cash

NO SUCH THING AS BAD PUBLICITY?

CALGARY – The social media backlash is intense as a Calgary radio station burns $5,000 cash for a promotion.

Amp Radio’s Bank It or Burn It contest gave listeners a chance to vote on whether or not the cash should be burned or given to charity.

A majority of the people that voted over a two week period said the money should be torched.

The station’s morning show hosts took the cash to a local pet crematorium and video taped the destruction.

The outrage about the stunt is being expressed on the station’s Facebook page with comments like, “There are little children going hungry in this city and you fools a burning money?”

One of the DJ's, Ryan Lindsay, told CTV News, “The $5,000, we have unfortunately burned, is a fraction of what almost any other entity in this city spends on their marketing costs alone, and it's garnered a lot of talk.”

The morning show isn’t letting the criticism stop the contest.

Starting Monday, they will be asking their listeners whether to bank or burn $10,000 in cash.
