Kamloops firefighters rescue child stuck in snowy concrete skateboard park

Firefighters came to the rescue last night when a child got stuck at a Kamloops skate park.

The snowy concrete bowl at McArthur Island skatepark was too slippery for an easy escape, so just before 6 p.m. yesterday, Dec. 28, the child's parent called for help.

"With the weather and how smooth the skate park is, they were unable to climb out," Kamloops Fire Rescue acting platoon captain Darryl Damini said.

The McArthur Island skatepark, like most of Kamloops, is blanketed in snow, and the smooth concrete bowl can be difficult to climb even in ideal conditions.

So while firefighters in Kamloops have been called for service to more serious incidents like vehicles sliding off icy roads, they were able to make time yesterday for the unusual service call.

"I think it's a first," Damini said.

A crew arrived with Engine 2 and slid a ladder down to him to help the child escape from the concrete bowl.
